Episode 5: Conquering The Narrows: A Wet and Adventurous Hike in Zion National Park

Zion National Park in southwestern Utah is known for its awe-inspiring landscapes and breathtaking canyons. Among its many popular trails, one stands out as both challenging and exhilarating—the iconic hike through The Narrows. In July 2017, we embarked on this unforgettable adventure, where knee-deep water, deep slot canyons, and a bustling crowd made for an extraordinary and memorable experience.

The Narrows is a hike unlike any other, as it takes you through the Virgin River, which flows through the narrowest section of Zion Canyon. As we began our trek, we quickly realized that navigating the trail meant walking in ankle to knee-deep water for the majority of the journey. The water level can vary depending on the time of year and recent rainfall, but in July 2017, the water was refreshingly cool, and it provided a respite from the scorching desert heat. However, the uneven riverbed and slippery rocks made each step a careful balancing act, demanding focus and agility.

The highlight of The Narrows is undoubtedly the stunning slot canyons that tower above you as you make your way through the river. These magnificent walls, carved by millions of years of erosion, create a mesmerizing display of colors and textures. The Narrows boasted an array of beautiful hues, from deep reds and oranges to the occasional vibrant green of hanging gardens. The sheer immensity of the slot canyons instilled a sense of awe, as I felt minuscule compared to the towering sandstone walls that rose hundreds of feet above me.

Zion National Park is a popular destination, and The Narrows is one of its main attractions. Consequently, July 2017 saw a large number of hikers eager to experience the allure of this unique hike. The sheer number of people added a sociable atmosphere to the journey.

Hiking The Narrows in Zion National Park in July 2017 was an adventure filled with challenges, natural beauty, and a bustling crowd. The experience of traversing knee-deep water, maneuvering through the depths of slot canyons, and encountering numerous fellow hikers created lasting memories that I cherish to this day. The Narrows is a testament to the power of nature and serves as a reminder of the beauty and grandeur that can be found in the most unexpected places. Whether you are an experienced hiker or a novice adventurer, I highly recommend adding The Narrows to your bucket list and embracing the journey of a lifetime.
